Kyiv, August 3 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has called on the National Bank of Ukraine to take emergency action regarding several issues in the banking sector, the president's Web site has reported, referring to a letter by Yuschenko to NBU officials. "The head of state has drawn the attention of the NBU to the fast growing threat to the stability of the hryvnia. Apart from that, Yuschenko said that late payments on people's deposits makes the proper functioning of the sector impossible," the statement says. The president also noted the low level of recapitalization of financial institutions at which owners were to increase bank capital on their own. The statement also said that the president urged NBU officials to take emergency measures and cover debts on deposit payments to clients. Yuschenko also wrote that some measures should be taken to resume primary role of banks in national investment projects, particularly preparations for the Euro 2012 Football Championship. "A special scheme of attracting investments was prepared to fund [Euro 2012] objects. I urge the officials to fulfill this scheme," Yuschenko wrote. The president also gave the NBU one week to prepare and make public a schedule of measures to be taken on these issues in 2009. | |
