UKRAINE SHOULD REMAIN PRINCIPLE GAS TRANSIT COUNTRY FOR EU, SAYS YATSENIUK
Kyiv, July 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine should
retain the position of the principal gas transit country, said the Front for
Change initiative leader, Arseniy Yatseniuk, who earlier announced his
presidential ambitions.
The Ukrainian politician was commenting on
the recent signing of the international agreement on the construction of the
Nabucco pipeline by Turkey
and four EU countries - Bulgaria,
Romania, Hungary and Austria, the Front for Change's
press service reported.
Yatseniuk welcomed the international dialog
on the diversification of gas supply routes.
"However, what will this mean to Ukraine? This
is the project bypassing Ukraine,
similar to Nord Stream. Why don't we support the Nord Stream, which is being
built by Russia?
Because it can mean only one thing – Ukraine is losing its transit
opportunities," the Front for Change leader said.
Yatseniuk believes the principle "what
is bad for Russia, is good
for Ukraine"
to be incorrect. "This project questions Ukraine's transit potential. That
is why Ukraine
should retain not only its potential, but also the possibility to be a gas
transit agent for the European Union," he said.
