Kyiv, August 6 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The situation in Ukraine with some animal diseases in 2009 has improved, the chief veterinary inspector, Petro Verbytsky, said at a press conference in Kyiv on Wednesday. He said that the number of rabies cases has plunged. He said that since the start of 2009, 322 rabies cases were registered, which is 694 less year-over-year. The official said that veterinary services vaccinate wild animals in six regions where the situation with rabies is the worst. In addition, Verbytsky said that the period for a risk of bird flu outbreak finished, as wild birds have ended their migrations. He said that veterinary services conducted around 90,000 checks on poultry. "The checks indicate that the situation is stable as a whole," he said. Verbytsky noted that despite a fall in the risk of a bird flu outbreak in Ukraine, poultry farms should continue operating in the close regime and inform the public on possible sources of bird flu infection. He said that at present, Ukraine does not have A-list diseases according to the classification of the International Epizootic Bureau (most dangerous infections). He also said that the situation with leptospirosis has improved in the country. | |
