Kyiv, August 6 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Odesa maritime merchant port in January to July 2009 saw cargo handling fall by 23.1%, to 16.12 million tonnes year-on-year, according to the port.

Container turnover over the seven months fell by 43%, to 133,370 TEU.

In July 2009, the port decreased cargo transshipment by 36.7%, to 1.95 million tonnes compared to 2008.

The port's container turnover in July fell by 50.5%, to 23,770 TEU.

Odesa port is one of Ukraine's largest ports. Its capacity is over 14 million tonnes of dry cargo and 24 million tonnes of liquid cargo every year.

The port can accept ships with drafts of up to 13 meters, and lengths of up to 270 meters. The total length of its berths is over eight kilometers.
