16:14 AMCU CHECKING WHOLESALE AND RETAIL SUGAR TRADERS
Kyiv, July 30 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine (AMCU) is checking on activities of wholesale sugar traders and large retail chains where sugar is sold, according to Oleksandr Melnychenko, the acting head of the committee. "At present, antitrust agency bodies are studying the activities of wholesale sugar traders and large retail chains where sugar is sold," he said at an extended meeting of the committee held in Kyiv on Thursday. He said that preliminary results of checks give grounds to open cases on the violation of competition law on the sugar market. Melnychenko said that the committee believes that a rise in the domestic retail prices of sugar is economically unjustifiable. He said that ending sugar stocks were sufficient to cover more than four months' sugar consumption. "The rising sugar prices are explained by the actions of particular market players, in particular wholesale traders and retailers," he said. He said that the committee instructed all its territorial departments to increase monitoring of the sugar market.
