16:13 AGRARIAN FUND SELLS AROUND 10,000 TONNES OF SUGAR, CONTINUES SALES
Kyiv, July 30 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Agrarian Fund has sold around 10,000 tones of sugar under a cabinet instruction, Yuriy Luzan, first deputy agriculture minister, has reported. "Around 10,000 tonnes of sugar was sold at prices almost half those in retail chains," he said at an extended meeting of the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine held in Kyiv on Thursday. Luzan said that the fund continues selling sugar on the market. He said that a possibility to sell sugar from the state reserve is being considered. He expressed hope that the measures would stabilize the price situation on the sugar market. He said that the rise in the price of sugar is evidence of monopoly activities by some market players. According to various estimates, ending sugar stocks in Ukraine as of September 1, 2009 would amount to some 600,000-700,000 tonnes, he said. Luzan expressed hope that the parliament would boost financing for the Agrarian Fund this year, which would allow it to increase sugar purchases for the state food reserves during a period of market saturation.
