Kyiv, July 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) welcomed the first ever donation of $580,000 in shipments of 1,000 tonnes of wheat made from the government of Ukraine on July 22, 2009, to support WFP's efforts and to feed close to five million people in Ethiopia who are in need of emergency relief assistance, according to the UN news center.

"This is a very timely donation as our relief program is badly stretched at the moment," a WFP representative in Ethiopia said.

"The Ukrainian donations will help to ease the pressure on the WFP's national relief program, which is designed to deliver emergency food assistance to nearly five million people who are facing hunger as a result of the triple threat of drought, high prices, and financial crisis. The relief program is currently experiencing a severe shortage of funds and resources. Based on the existing caseload, established in January, 2009, the program is short of over 116,000 tonnes of commodities, valued at close to $96 million," he said.
