ROMANIA TO GIVE UKRAINE ITS COMMENTS ON DANUBE-BLACK SEA CANAL'S ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY BY AUGUST 3

Kyiv, July 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Romania will submit to Ukraine by August 3 an updated list of issues concerning the new Danube Black Sea navigable canal's impact on the environment.

This was agreed during the bilateral consultations involving representatives of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Ecology Ministry and experts as well as Romanian executives and environmental experts, the Ukrainian Transport and Communications Ministry reported.

The Danube-Black Sea navigable canal goes through the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. The Danube delta hosts over 1,500 species of flora and 3,600 species of fauna, including the Red List species.

A number of organizations, including the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the World Wildlife Fund and the European Commission, opposed the construction of the canal.

The official opening of the first part of the deep-water navigable canal Danube-Black Sea took place on August 26, 2004.
