Kyiv, August 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The number of professional players on the Ukrainian stock market with one or more licenses issued by the State Commission for Securities and the Stock Market since the start of 2009 has fallen by 27 or 1.7%, to 1,559, the commission has told Interfax-Ukraine.

The commission said that the trend seen this year is a new one for the market, as earlier the number of professional players had always grown: in Q3, 2008 – it went up by 9, in Q4, 2008 – by 16, while in Q1, 2009 their number fell by 14 and in Q2, 2009 – by 13.

The commission said that the fall is linked to a drop in the number of companies that have licenses to trade with securities by 29, to 271 companies.

The number of registrars whose fate remains unclear due to the requirement of the law on joint-stock companies to transfer all securities into a non-documentary form from November 2010, has stopped growing, and fell from 380 to 379.

The increase in the number of asset management companies almost stopped, as of July 1, 2009 there were 412 companies compared to 411 as of early 2009, while in H2, 2008 their number grew by 21.

The number of licenses on the organization of trading (ten exchanges and one trading and information system) and clearing activities (two depositories) remained unchanged in H1, 2009, while the number of depositories grew from two to three: All-Ukraine Depository of Securities joined to the Interregional Stock Union and national Depository of Ukraine.

In January to June 2009 the commission cancelled 141 licenses and issued 131 licenses, while in H1, 2008 the indicators were 82 and 250 respectively, and in 2008 – 174 and 576 respectively.
