LAWMAKERS REJECT INITIATIVE TO INCREASE AGRARIAN FUND'S ASSETS TO UAH 3 B

Kyiv, July 24 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, has voted down a draft resolution obliging the Cabinet of Ministers to increase the Agrarian Fund's assets to UAH 3 billion at the expense of the stabilization fund and other sources and set aside funds worth at least 10% of GDP in the 2010 national budget for the financing of agrarian programs.

The draft resolution on urgent measures aimed at the stabilization of Ukraine's agriculture sector, which was considered at first reading on Friday, scored 115 out of the necessary 226 votes.

Under the resolution, the cabinet should have ensured the assistance to Ukrainian agri-businesses foreseen in the 2009 national budget and taken measures to reduce the costs of loans.

Moreover, the cabinet should have raised the Agrarian Fund's assets to UAH 3 billion within a week after the resolution was passed in order to ensure the purchase of grain from farmers and observe the declared prices of grain.

The resolution also instructed the Economy Ministry to analyze the country's food balance and secure the minimization of the import of foodstuff, ban the import of poor-quality products, as well as foods containing genetically modified organisms.

The draft resolution also suggested that the cabinet foresee the financing of agrarian programs to the tune of 10% of GDP and more in the draft national budget for 2010.

The draft resolution was drawn up by deputy of the Lytvyn Bloc Yekateryna Vaschuk.
