CENTRAL BANK: NUMBER OF UNPROFITABLE BANKS IN Q2 GROWS TO 64

Kyiv, August 3 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The number of unprofitable banks April through June 2009 grew to 64, up from 41 registered in the first quarter of 2009.

As the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) reported on its official Web site, the overall net losses of Ukraine's banking system January through June were estimated at UAH 14.321 billion, including UAH 7.301 billion in the second quarter. As of July 1, 2009, Ukraine's largest bank accounted for 63.4%, or UAH 9.079 billion, of the banks' consolidated losses for the first half of 2009.

Among Ukraine's top 18 banks, the heaviest losses were sustained by Ukrprombank (UAH 4.603 billion), Raiffeisen Bank Aval (UAH 1.085 billion), Nadra Bank (1.041 billion), UkrSibbank (UAH 831 million), the First Ukrainian International Bank (UAH 604 million), and OTP Bank (UAH 565 million).

The largest profit for the first six months of 2009 was posted by Kyiv-based Oschadbank of Ukraine (UAH 754 million), while Ukraine's largest bank in terms of assets, PrivatBank, ranked second with UAH 405 million in net profit.

The overall assets of Ukraine's banking system shrank by 6.6%, UAH 61.392 billion, January through June 2009, to UAH 864.695 billion. However, in the second quarter, the pace of the reduction in overall assets slowed compared to the first quarter and was a mere UAH 5.939 billion.

As the NBU reported, six Ukrainian banks posted a negative net worth in the first six months of 2009. In particular, Ukrprombank's negative net worth grew by 6.4% in the second quarter, to UAH 2.677 billion, while that of Transbank soared by 13 times, to UAH 376.181 million.

The deficit of Rodovid Bank's net worth by July 1, 2009 was UAH 211.802 million (whereas it was positive January through March, at UAH 1.238 billion), that of Bank Kyiv was UAH 612.623 million (UAH 207.999 million), that of Bank Dnister was UAH 135.266 million (UAH 141.812 million), and that of Bank National Standard was UAH 126.815 million (UAH 100.333 million).

Among Ukraine's largest banks, only Ukrprombank had a negative net worth by July. However, an excess of charter capital over net worth in the second quarter was registered at UkrSibbank (UAH 5.28 billion charter capital and UAH 5.277 billion net worth), OTP Bank (UAH 2.068 billion and UAH 1.933 billion respectively), Forum Bank (UAH 2.26 billion and UAH 2.247 billion), and Swedbank (UAH 2.159 billion and UAH 1.848 billion).

The overall charter capital of Ukraine's largest banks January through June rose by 13.8%, or by UAH 6.972 billion, to UAH 57.328 billion, which was 62.3% of the overall charter capital of all Ukrainian banks. The overall charter capital January through June alone increased by UAH 1.533 billion.

In general, the charter capital of Ukraine's banking system January through June grew by 11.5%, or by UAH 9.552 billion, to UAH 92.006 billion. In the second quarter alone it rose by UAH 3.76 billion.

As of July 1, there were 184 operating banks in Ukraine, according to the NBU.
