16:52 BYT AND REGIONS PARTY SURE VETO ON EURO 2012 LAW TO BE OVERRIDDEN
Kyiv, August 3 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Officials from the Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko and the Regions Party have said parliament will be able to override presidential veto on the law on funding Euro 2012 Football Championship preparation projects. Head of the BYT faction Olena Shustyk said: "I think the parliament will override this veto. Nobody doubts the fact that Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko is willing to sacrifice the international prestige of the state in his ultimate disaffection with the successful Cabinet of Ministers." She also said parliament was able to put aside political struggles and adopt the law, which solves funding issues connected to the Euro 2012 projects in Ukraine. MP of the Regions Party Nestor Shufrych said: "I'm absolutely sure we shall override veto on the bill on Euro 2012 funding, but I think after the things [President] Yuschenko did, he has no right to call himself a Ukrainian…" Apart from that, MP Borys Kolesnikov (Regions Party) said that actions of the president have "a destructive character." He also said that after placing the veto, the president must suggest some alternative ways of funding the championship. He added that the opposition was doing all it can to help Ukraine host the Euro 2012. When asked if the authors of the bill plan to persuade Yuschenko to reconsider it, Kolesnikov said: "I think that Prime Minister [Yulia Tymoshenko] should do that. They are in a coalition. The opposition took a step forward in supporting the bill."
